On15Decemberat0230UTCChinalauncheditsfirstAmateurRadiosatelliteXi
Wang1(Hope1)fromtheTaiyuanSatelliteLaunchCenterinShanxiprovince.It
receivedanofficialOSCAR(OrbitalSatelliteCarryingAmateurRadio)
designationofHO68sixdayslater.
AMSATChina(CAMSAT)ranaspecialeventstationBT3WXfromTaiyuanto
commemoratethelaunch.Theyhopethatthesatellitewillinspireradioamateurs
andyoungpeopletolearnaboutamateursatellitecommunicationtechnology
andspace.
The68by48cmsatelliteweighs60kilogramsandisina1200kmhighSunsynchronousorbitthat
enablescontactsbetweenstationsover5000kmapart.ThecommunicationpayloadincludesaCW
beaconandthreecrossband(145to435MHz)transpondersforSSB/CW,FManddigitalAX.25packet
operation.
Thetransponderswereactivatedafewdaysafterlaunchandhundredsofcontactsweremadeoverthe
Christmasholidayperiod.Thelineartransponder,usedforSSBandCWworking,hasprovedvery
popular.Ithasabandwidthof50kHzwhichallowsabout1015simultaneouscontactstotakeplace
andsoundslikethe20metreband.
On30DecemberMikeDK3WNandHenkPA3GUOshowedyoucouldalsosendpicturesthroughthe
SSBtransponderwhentheycarriedoutthefirstSlowScanTV(SSTV)contact.
DuetoDopplershifttheCWbeaconcanappeartobeupto+/9kHzfromitsnominalfrequencyof
435.790MHzandyouneedtotuneyourreceivertofollowitduringthepass.Thebeaconhasbeen
receivedonsimpleantennassuchasa¼wavegroundplanebutforbestresultstryasmallyagiwith
about8elements.
ToreducetheeffectsofDopplertheSSBtransponderisinverting.ThismeansthataLSBsignalonthe
uplinkbecomesaUSBsignalonthedownlink.Youdon’tneedmuchpowertoworkthroughthe
satellite,manycontactshavebeenmadeusing5wattsoutput.Alwaysusethelowestpowerpossible
andensureyourdownlinksignalisneverstrongerthanthebeacon.
