AMIBEINGUNDERSTOOD?

llthroughmyyearsofvariouscommunicationsoperationsinthisgreathobbyofradio,I
havealwaysbeenattunedtothepronunciationsofwordsinvocabularyandhowwetryto
clarifywhatwearesayingtoanotheroperator.
Sometimesthereisanoutrightlaughthatcannotbehelpedduetothepoorestofpoor
examplesofwordssomepeoplecomeupwithwhenfacedwithtryingtophonetically
pronouncetheirintendedwords.
Mostalloftheprofessional(notsomuchanactualprofessionalastheyarejust
involvedinthatrealmofcommunication)havebeentaughtineithertheMilitaryorLaw
Enforcementphoneticsstyles.Itisnotdifficultforonetoaccessthisinformationonphonetics
inAmateurRadio.SimplylookintheTechnicianManualandthereisalistingofthewordsand
theirphoneticmate,alongwiththe“Q”signalsandthechartforR­S­Tmeanings.Thatis
anotherareaaltogether,weshalltalkaboutthatanothertime.
Havingbeentrainedinbothareasofphoneticusage,ithadnotbeendifficultformetocross
trainandlearntheotherstyle.TheremaybetimesthatImusthesitatetoquicklyrecallthe
correctmatewordtouse,butithasneverbeenlost.Humoroustimesinthelawenforcement
operations.SomeyearsagowhenIwasworkingasanofficerforasmallsuburbinDallas
County,Texas,therewasanewwomanofficertraineelearninghowtousetheradioandcall
inrequestsforlicenseandregistration.Mosteveryoneinthatsituationofworkingonthesame
shiftwillalwayslistenmoreintentlywaitingforsomeissuetoarise.
Wehaveallbeenthereinourearlydaysofoperatingaradiowhenweweretimid,shy,and
nervousaboutkeyingthemicrophoneandknowingthatsomeoneontheotherendisgoingto
belisteningandwaitingforustomakeamistakeandthenwewillhearthelaughter,chatter
andalltheresultingjokesaboutourtechnique.Whenthisofficerwaswithhertrainingofficer,
helethercalloutonatrafficstopandinthateventthelocation,andthelicenseplateofthe
vehicle,alongwiththedescriptionofthevehicleisgiven.Thelicenseplatewasoneofthose
withalphacharactersandsomenumerals.Togivethealphacharactersthatdistinctionof
whichcharactersshewasseeingsherelieduponherimmediateknowledgeandrecitedthe
lettersas“K”“H”andthenstated“Kitten­Harold.”
Everyonewascrackingup!Itwasariotfortheremainderoftheshift.Shehasnotlivedthat
daydownyetandithasbeenovertwenty­yearsnow.Howfunny.Butthatisright!Wealldoit.
Wehaveamemoryblankandusethemostimmediatewordthatcomestomindandbefore
weknowitthatwordisoutontheair.
Phoneticsisnotonlyforbrevity,butalsoforclarity.Hopefullyitmakesthereceptionof
theinformationbytheotheroperatoreasiertounderstandthefirsttime.Byourusageofthe
prescribedformatandmatewordsbeingusedintheparticularservice,ourcommunications
willbeeasiertounderstandandconcise.
TodaywhenIlisteninonpublicsafetyoramateurradioHFfrequencies,Istillhear
operatorsadlibbingwiththemostatrociousmatewords.Insteadofusing“JOHN”fortheletter
“J”inpublicsafetyIhearofficerssay“JACK”oreven“JILL”andthisdoesnotsoundvery
professionalatall.Ofcourseitkeepstheairwaveshoppingwithfunnysoundingwordsbutitis
notsomethingthatwouldbemeasuredasprofessionalbysomeonewhoisconductinga
surveyofproperprocedures.
OntheamateurradioImanytimeswillhearoperatorsusing“KILOWATT”for“K”whenthe
propermatewordis“KILO”.Kilowattisameasurementofpowerandnotawordforphonetics.
Therearemanyothersubstitutewordsbeingusedinamateurradioanditreallysoundspoor.
OftentimesIwillheartheDXoperatorsoutsidetheUSA,usingbetterproperphoneticsover
whatonewouldexpectfromthelargestcountrywithnumberoflicensedamateurradio
operators.
Onemajoritemaboutamateurradioisthatthereisnoonecountrythatholdsanyprecedence
ofsuperiorityoveranothercountry.TheUSAseemstohavemorelicensedoperatorsand
thereseemstobemoremanufacturersofradiorelatedequipmentintheUSAthanmostany
othercountry.GermanyandJapanbothhavesomeverygoodqualityequipmentproducedin
theirrespectivecountries.WhenIhearanoperatoroutsideoftheUSAtheyareusuallybetter
attheirphoneticsusagethantheoperatorsinNorthAmericaortheUSA.
SoinclosingIwouldofferthistoallmyfellowoperatorsintheentireamateurradioandany
professionalcommunicationsoperations,becomeveryfamiliarwiththeproperprofessional
phoneticwordsthatarelistedtobeusedtoverifythelettersthatarebeingsaid,insteadof
substitutingwithlocalcolloquialismsand“funny”wordsthatdonotsoundprofessionalatall
whenontheair.Youwillfeelbetteraboutyourself,andotherswillbeabletomoreclearly
understandyouaswell.
