IstartedtoreadwithgreatexcitementthearticlewrittenbyYO2**,dedicatedtothe40years
anniversaryoftheradioclubofTimisoara,mybelovedplaceofbirth,abandonedbyme37
yearsago,butonwhosestreetsIstillwalkofteninmydreams.ThereIbroughtupandwent
toschool,thereItraveledinfrostywintermornings,whenthemercuryofthethermometer
descendedunder­20degreesC,sometimesonthefootboardofthecrowdedstreetcar6,on
itscircularway,throughtheMariaplazaandonthebridgeovertheriverBega,tryingtoarrive
intimetotheMusicalHighSchoolsituatedinthedowntown.ButIhaven’timaginedinmy
nastiestdreamsthatreadingthisarticleIwillcomeacrossagainwith«comrade»Alexandru,
albeitonlyunderthespiritualshapeofanameprintedonpaper.Likeinanightmare,comrade
Alexandrureappearedinmylife,thoughIwashopingoncethatI’llmayerasehimforgood
frommymemory.
Theauthorofthearticleisarrogatinghimgoodorganizers’abilities­whoknows,maybehe
wasreallyagoodorganizer­butformehewastheonewhofortwolengthyyearsprevented
thefulfilmentofadream.
Iwas16whenaclassmate,avioloncelistinoculatedmewiththebugofamateurradioby
givingmeafewissuesoftheTheRadioAmateurmagazineandrevealingmethe«secret»
thatontheshortwavebands,amidstthebroadcastingstationsonecanhearradioamateurs
ragchewingfreely,somethingfastunconceivabletothespectatorsofthepropagandafilmsof
thoseyears,inwhichtheonlyonesoperatingradiostationswereeitherbraveSovietsoldiers,
orspies,disgustingtraitorsintheserviceoftheWesternintelligenceagencies,whoended
alwaysbybeingcaught,thankstothepatriotismofapionieroraComsomolist(memberofthe
SovietYoungCommunists’organization),whodiscoveredtheiractivityandinformedthe
authorities.
Ifoundquicklyinourrudimentaryradiosetthe40and20metersbandsand,amazed,I
startedtolistentheQSO’softhelocalamateursandoftheforeignstationsinAM,among
themmanyItalianstations,withtheirextremelystrongsignals.Then,withthehelpofanold
scoutguideIlearnedbymyselftocopytheCWcontactstoo;obviouslythesignalsdidn’thave
amusicalsound,theywereonly«buzzing»,andIrememberthethrillfeltwhenIheardina
veryearlymorningthetremblingsignalofaW6stationsendingQTHCAandthenaChilean
stationfromAntofagasta.Ievenmanufacturedlogsheets,keepingrecordofmyreceptions
andIstartedtodreamthatonedayIwillsendQSLcardsbearingmySWLcall­sign!
Inthewinterof1959Ienteredmynameforthetelegraphycoursesorganizedbythe
A.V.S.A.P.,the«VoluntaryAssociationfortheDefenceoftheHomeland»,heldinthemain
roomoftheradioclubandIgraduatedtheminthesummerof1960.Ibecamealsothehappy
ownerofafabulousbookletwithgraycovers,theRadioAmateurTraffic,fromwhichIlearned
alotofnewthings.ItcomprisedthelistoftheDXCCcountries,theirprefixes,theirCQzones.
AfterafewmonthsIknewmostofthembyheart,manyoftheprefixesappearedalreadyin
my«logs»,sothatwhenamemberoftheexaminationscommissionfortheamateurradio
certificatesaskedmeaboutsomeEuropeanprefixesIhadnotroubleatalltogivehimthe
rightanswers.InNovember1960IbecametheproudbeareroftheAmateurRadioShort
WaveListenerCertificateNo.184andIfiledtogetherwithmytelegraphycoursescolleagues
theapplicationfortheSWLLicense.Everythingseemedtobeallright,nothingforebodedthe
enterofcomradeAlexandruinthesceneandinmylife,toovershadowtheenjoymentsofmy
youngyears.
