Warp your loom to allow for a
piece 22 beads wide (23 threads).
Double the warp thread on the out-
side edges, 25 total threads.
Step 2:
LOOMWORK
BEAD CHART
Tie 6' of thread onto the double
warp thread on the left edge leaving
a 4" tail. Start one third of the way
up on the loom to allow for the
fringed part of the bag to be com-
pleted later. Follow the chart (right)
to work the back section of the bag.
Step 3:
Work the top third of the bag while
decreasing every two rows(Figure 2).
Do not end the thread, because you
can use it later to attach the dangle
to the flap.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions
for warping your bead loom. Note that you
will need one more warp thread than you
have number of beads in a row.
To weave the beads, tie a thread to an
outside warp (tie onto the left warp if you
are right-handed, the right warp if you are
left-handed). Use a needle to string the first
row of beads and slide them down to the
knot. Bring the beaded weft thread under
the warp threads and push the beads up
with your fingers so that there is one bead
between each two warp threads. Hold the
beads in place and pass back through all
the beads, making sure that the weft thread
passes over the warp threads. End your
threads by weaving back through the bead-
work, tying knots between beads.
FRINGE
Note:
For the piece shown, each fringe
is about 18 seed beads long, not includ-
ing the drop bead on the end. The fringe
can be adjusted depending on the length
of the drop beads or the size of the other
accent beads. The color of the seed
beads in the fringe should follow the
color of the seed beads in that loom-
worked row.
Step 4:
Work the bottom third of the
graph with fringes on each row. You
can leave the loom in the same posi-
tion and work the rows toward you,
or you can turn the loom around and
continue working toward the top of
the loom. If you do turn the loom,
be sure to also turn the graph. Tie a
new thread onto the left-side warp
thread leaving a 4" tail. *Follow the
chart to string 22 beads. Push them
up between the warp threads to
check that you have followed the pat-
tern and have the correct number of
beads. String the right-side fringe
beads and a drop bead. Pass back
through all the fringe beads, pulling
the thread so that the fringe is snug
To decrease, at the completion of the last
full row, bring the needle under the outer
warp thread and pass back through the
number of beads to be decreased. Bring the
weft thread under and then back over the
next warp thread. (This thread becomes
the outer warp for the next, shorter row.)
Thread beads for the shorter row and pro-
ceed as usual.

against the warp thread. Be sure that
the 22 beads are still between each
warp thread. Pass back through the
topside of the 22 beads. String the
left-side fringe beads and a drop
bead. Once again, pass back through
all the fringe beads, pulling the
thread so that the fringe is snug
against the warp thread. Repeat from
* for each row. After doing the last
left-side fringe, pass through a few
beads in the last row, tie a knot, pass
through the rest of the row, and trim
close to the work.

Step 1:
Holding on to the finished piece
with one hand, cut the warp
threads. Be sure to cut the threads
as long as possible. Lay the finished
beadwork on the table and add a
needle to one of the warp threads.
Weave the warp thread back into
the piece by going over one thread
row and under the next. After weav-
ing the thread through several rows,
tie a knot and pass through that row
of beads. Trim close to the work.
Step 6:
three times the length of the strap
plus a little more. Attach the thread
by passing it through part of a row
of beads, tie a knot, and continue
through the rows to come out the
first row without fringe. String
15–25 seed beads and a group of
accent beads. Continue alternating
seed beads and accent beads until
the strap is the desired length, end-
ing with seed beads. Pass into the
first row of beadwork above the
fringe on the opposite side of the
bag. Tie a knot and pass through
the row, exiting the same bead on
the end of the row where you
started the strap. Using the other
color of seed beads, string the same
number of beads as you did in the
first row of the strap. Pass through
the group of accent beads.
Continue stringing seed beads
and passing back through the
groups of accent beads until you
have completed the strap.
Pass into the first row of bead-
work above the fringe on the oppo-
site side of the bag. Tie a knot and
continue across the row, coming
out the same bead on the end of the
row where you started the strap. If
the needle will not fit through that
row, drop down one row, and back
up on the other side.
Complete a third pass through
the strap with either of the colors
of seed beads or a mixture of the
colors. Tie off the thread, pass
through a few beads, and trim close
to the work.
If you left the thread you were
weaving with, you can use that to
attach the front dangle. If not, attach
a new thread and exit the side of the
last row that contains two beads.
String seed beads, accent beads, and
a drop bead. Skipping the drop
bead, pass back through the other
beads in the dangle. Pull the thread
snug to the loomwork. Weave
through the loomwork, tie a knot,
weave through several more beads,
and trim close to the work.
Fold the bag so that the first row
of fringe is the bottom front row of
the bag. Begin a thread, exiting the
loomwork on the row above where
the first row of fringe starts (the
bottom row on the back of the bag).
Holding the bag so the back of the
bag is facing you, pass under the
warp threads on the front and then
on the back of the bag. Continue in
the same manner, completing a
stitch between each row of fringe,
moving from the bottom of the bag
toward the flap. For the last 4 or 5
rows at the top of the bag, repeat
the stitches twice between each row
to provide stability where you will
attach the strap. Tie off the thread,
weave it into the main part of the
bag, and trim close to the work.

Doris Coghill has been doing seed bead work
for about ten years. Four years ago she was
laid off from the corporate world and was able
to go into beading full time. This has allowed
her more freedom to travel and to design and
teach beadwork. Her kit designs can be seen
on her website www.beadsbydee.com.
The strap is made up of three
strands of seed beads and uses dou-
bled thread for strength. Cut a dou-
bled piece of thread that will be
